AI Stone Column

Machine designed - Human crafted

A collaboration between architectural designer Tim Fu and stonemason Till Apfel

Artwork Description

"The AI Stone Carver" is a series of work that explores an antithetical approach to the relationship between machine and the human, brought on by the advent of AI diffusion technologies. Instead of the industrial paradigm of human-ideation to machine-fabrication, we now reverse this relationship and allow machine-ideation followed by human-fabrication.

We first explored the latent space of diffusion A.I. models to re-envision classical architectural elements through a new lens of futurist design narrative. Then, a computational model is developed to finetune and rationalize the geometry for production. Lastly, we incorporate human-fabrication, through skilled stone carving, creating a machine-driven concept that features human craftsmanship.

A series of column capitals were generated using midjourney AI and guided by the designer.

Selected design is modelled with 3d softwares

Postaer Sandstein, a stone with unique properties, is shipped from Pirna (near Dresden) to the workshop for preliminary cuts

Till  carves the stone by hand to achieve a high-precision recreation of the AI concept.

The column capital is resulted from machine intelligence and human handicraft, the first of its kind.
